  1. If you’re coming from Colfax High School, take Sumner St south, then turn right on 1st St and left onto Main. Turn left onto Spring St and find us at the corner of Spring and Mill.
  2. If you’re coming from Whitman Hospital, get onto Fairview St, then left onto Main. Continue north to Spring St, then you’ll find us at the end of the block, at 116 E Spring St.

How Much Local History Do You Know?

The history of Colfax, WA, stretches back to when the Palouse Indians first inhabited the area. By the summer of 1870, white settlers had begun to arrive, quickly establishing a community with the construction of a sawmill. Following this, a flour mill and other businesses were developed, propelling Colfax into a thriving town. The settlement, originally named “Belleville” by pioneer Jared Berarducci in honor of his girlfriend, underwent a name change to Colfax when Berarducci’s affections shifted; he chose the name to honor Schuyler Colfax, the U.S. Vice President at the time.

Colfax was officially incorporated on November 29, 1873. During 1889-90, the town was a contender to become the site of the new state agricultural college, which would eventually be established as Washington State University in the nearby town of Pullman. Despite its early prominence, Colfax faced challenges, including devastating floods in March 1910 and experiencing significant social unrest marked by notable lynchings in the late 1890s.

Despite these challenges, Colfax remained the largest city in the county until it was surpassed by Pullman in the 1930 census. Today, Colfax retains a rich heritage that reflects both the resilience and the community spirit of its residents throughout its history.
